Frigg gas was produced through wells drilled from the concrete drilling platform 1 (CDP1) and drilling platform 2 (DP2).

The job of the processing (treatment) platforms was to dewater the gas and condensate, and to control the flow rate and pressure of the gas being piped to Scotland.

Reservoir pressure declined as the gas was produced, so three compressors driven by gas turbines were installed on TCP2 in 1981. Also intended to serve TP1, these devices were installed between the separators and the dewatering units on the platform.

The gas contained water vapour on leaving the compressors, just as the air around us can contain varying levels of moisture.

In addition to the living quarters, QP also housed the central control room, which had the following functions:

A total of 48 production wells were drilled on Frigg, 24 each from CDP1 and DP2.

The maintenance department acted as a service organisation for the other departments and was responsible for ensuring that all equipment on the platforms functioned satisfactorily. That applied not only to production systems but also to safety and catering equipment and other hardware on the field installations.

Once gas began to flow from the CDP1 and DP2 wells, production operators took over the process. Although functions on these two platforms were largely automated, personnel were needed to check pressure in the wells and to open and close valves manually.

The process for approving the cessation plan for the actual Frigg installations got seriously under way in 1999, and it took the operator Total Norge five years to secure final approval.
