Construction of what was intended to be the first installation on Frigg, the DP1 drilling platform, began in the summer of 1973. The steel jacket was due to be positioned on the field the following summer.

Drilling and production platform 2 (DP2) stood on the Norwegian side of Frigg.

During appraisal of the Frigg field and its division between Norway and the UK, Petronord discovered the Lille-Frigg satellite in block 25/2 during 1975. The field was found in 155 metres of water.

Elf discovered North East Frigg in the spring of 1974, when Deepsea Driller encountered gas at depths from 1920 to 2040 metres beneath sealevel. The field was located 18 kilometres north-east of Frigg in block 25/1.

East Frigg was a satellite of Frigg which lay in 110 metres of water 18 kilometres from the main field. The production licences were numbered 024 and 026 for blocks 25/1 and 25/2 respectively, awarded in the second licensing round in 1969, and 112 for block 25/2 awarded in 1985.

The Frigg reservoir lies in 100 metres of water and 1 800 metres beneath the seabed. Its geological formation has a fan-like shape on seismic maps. Thanks to its shape, the field was originally known as Papillon - the French word for butterfly.

The Frigg area lies roughly in the centre of what is today the North Sea. It is located in the Viking graben, a north-south system of underwater rift valleys formed by movements in the Earth's crust. About 50 million years ago, in the early Eocene, large quantities of sand were deposited in this area.

The quarters platform (QP) provided accommodation for the three central installations on the field. It was also the nerve centre for Frigg, with control room, helideck and telecommunications.

Elf Aquitaine Norge made its first oil discovery in the autumn of 1987, about 32 kilometres south-east of Frigg.

In addition to the pipelines to St Fergus, there were a number of pipelines internally in the Frigg area.

Exploration drilling on Frigg began on 2 April 1971 from the Neptune VII rig. The sandstone in the formation proved so permeable that the gas was washed away in the drilling mud. After this first (wildcat) well - designated 25/1-1 ­- had been completed, eight appraisal wells were drilled up to 1976. A detailed seismic survey with a 1 x 1 kilometre grid was carried out over the whole reservoir in 1973.

The Frigg Transportation System (FTS) is the network of pipes that carried the gas from the Frigg Field to Scotland. Constructing and laying the twin 32 inch (81 centimetre) pipelines was a massive undertaking and immensely challenging. It began in 1974, and was completed in the summer of 1977.

The main function of St Fergus was to remove all liquids, both condensate and water from the gas, before it was sent further on in the britsh distribution pipelines.

The Alwyn area was licensed in 1965 to Total Oil Marine (33.33 per cent) as operator and Elf UK (66.67 per cent). This acreage lies on the UKCS 160 kilometres east of Shetland, 440 kilometres north-west of Aberdeen and 110 kilometres north of Frigg.

Esso discovered the Odin gas field in Norwegian block 30/10 on 28 March 1974. The reservoir lay between 1 997 and 2 067 metres below the drill floor of the Drillmaster rig. Covered by production licence 030, the acreage had been awarded by Esso in the second licensing round in 1969.
